EMPOWERMENT FAIR 2019

On Saturday, November 16, 2019, St. John Community Development Corporation hosted its Annual Community Empowerment Fair. Headlined with our slogan, “Doing Good for our community until our good becomes our BETTER and our better becomes our BEST!” We’ve expanded the scope of our partnership with an up and coming organization called “Saving Our Sonz”. This organization, founded by Josue Philistin, endeavors to unite the community of Overtown and educate young men by way of community service.

We continue to partner with First Housing, to provide homeownership counseling and information for residents interested in the first time home buying program. We also partnered with Synovus Bank, to provide financial literacy counseling, and “Girl Power”, and organization whose mission is to provide safe spaces where girls can express themselves with enthusiasm and confidence, program and services infused with social and emotional learning best practice models.

In addition to the informational aspect of the event, we offered complimentary health screening provided by the Jessie Trice Community Health Organization, games and face painting for the kids, free food catered by a local business owner, Jackson Bros Ice Cream, and special musical performance by DJ H2. The event was well attended by approximately 100 residents, local vendors and sponsors such as Jackson Bros Ice Cream, Trader Joe’s South Beach, Saving Our Sonz, Girl Power, FIU, 3PM Media Photography and the CDC’s Board of Directors and staff.
